Monday Mumpreneur with Catherine Poole

CMPEvery Monday we feature a mumpreneur just like you and me who’s ready and willing to open up their lives and their business to us.

They share with us their motivation, their challenges and their proudest moments in business and they also tell us how they take time to nurture themselves.

If you’re looking for inspiration, then our featured business mums show you what’s possible.

All I can say about this week's featured business mum is that we all need her in our lives . . .

Your name: Catherine Poole

Tell me about your children: Andrew (9) Emily (5)

Where do you live? Dunfermline, Scotland

PC or Mac?  PC

Tell us about your business

I am a virtual assistant who helps creative people make their words work harder for them with intelligent transcription, proofreading and editing. If you’re fabulous at articulating yourself verbally but struggle to get your words down on paper, I can help re-purpose your recorded content!

What motivated you to become a mumpreneur?

I went back to work part time after having my son and was made redundant, so I decided after having my daughter that going back to the traditional workplace wasn't going to work for me. I decided to set up my business at the end of 2010, and it’s been a steep learning curve, but I have no regrets!

What’s been your biggest challenge in business?

Realising after two years in business that I had no idea who my ideal client was!

How have you overcome it?

Having done one or two courses in the last year, I have a much better idea of who I want to appeal to and that’s creative women in business, particularly coaches, trainers and therapists who run online courses and create a lot of content which they want to re-purpose in order to add lots of extra value.

What’s been your proudest business moment?

I have a few moments I'm proud of rather than just one, but I would say starting my own business is probably my proudest, as I’d gone through most of my adult life being an employee, and would never have thought I could have been my own boss.

What’s your catchphrase or favourite quote?

I like this one from Denise Duffield Thomas – ‘I serve, I deserve’.

What do you do to relax or nurture yourself?

I have recently discovered relaxation MP3s, which I absolutely love, and I do like a good book. If I’m going to treat myself, I will go and have a facial and massage.

What was the last treat you bought for yourself?

I treated myself to a lovely steak dinner at the weekend on a night out with the girls!

Favourite colour: Red

Favourite flowers: Tulips

What one piece of advice would you like to give to a new mumpreneur?

Remember that you’re an expert. It’s all too easy to think you’re just ‘little old me’ in business (particularly if you’re a mum, unfortunately) and compare yourself to everyone else, but whatever it is you do, you can do something that a lot of other people can’t.
