Monday Mumpreneur with Heidi Mavir
I'm delighted to introduce Heidi Mavir (The Slap Addict) as our featured Monday Mumpreneur. She's just like you and me and she's ready and willing to share with us her motivation, her challenges and her proudest moments in business and also tell us how she takes time to nurture herself.
If you’re looking for inspiration, then our featured business mums show you what’s possible.
Hi Heidi, welcome to Mum's Got a Business ....
Tell me about your children:
I have a 12 year old daughter named Tilly. She’s a kick ass human with the biggest heart, an incredible lust for life and a lego addiction. She’s also really good company – I love hanging out with her.
Where do you live? Wakefield, Yorkshire (God’s own county) UK
PC or Mac?
I never felt cool enough for a MAC 😉
Tell us about your business
I am an Elite Status Leader with Younique Cosmetics - a cosmetics company with a mission to uplift, empower and validate women everywhere. I’ve been with the company for 18 months and I currently have a team of 350 Presenters (or Business Partners). We all work to spread the mission of Younique by promoting their products online (mainly via social media). I love working with the amazing women in my team – it’s like a worldwide sisterhood of kick ass female entreprenuers.
You can find me on Facebook at HeidiTheSlapAddictYounique or online at www.theslapaddict.com
I am also Co Producer of the award winning Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival, which you can check out at www.hebdenbridgeburlesquefestival.co.uk
What motivated you to become a mumpreneur?
I like being my own boss and I wanted the freedom to spend time with Tilly on my own terms. Also – working for myself I get to pick who I work with – I pick my own workmates.
With my Younique business I very specifically wanted to be in multi-level marketing because I really like the model – which lets you own and grow your own business without the extra trappings of being a one-woman band. Things like warehousing and stock and invoicing is all taken care of so I can just focus on the fun stuff: promoting my brand and sharing my passion for the mission. Plus, the uncapped earning potential was also a draw!
What’s been your biggest challenge in business?
The biggest challenge in business is my biggest challenge in every other aspect of my life – negative self talk! That little voice inside that tells me I am not enough. Not clever enough, not quick enough, not confident enough, not skilled enough, not pretty enough, not thin enough, not lovable enough …. It’s a killer!
How have you overcome it?
I believe that if you grow yourself, you will grow your business. I spend at least 30 minutes every day (even weekends) on Personal Development. I read. A LOT. Mainly books about personal psychology and the law of attraction. I use daily affirmations to keep myself on track with positivity and I have built myself a collective of amazing women (most of them in the same business as me) who I lean on for support.
What’s been your proudest business moment?
I feel so blessed to have had so many moments that make me feel proud. When someone in my team tells me I have helped them, it makes my heart soar.
Being recognised on stage in front of the top leaders in the company as Number 2 in the UK for sponsoring new presenters into my team – I LOVE helping women get started on their Younique journey and seeing them grow (in confidence and in their business)
It was also bloody amazing when Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival won “Best Festival or Event” at the first ever Annual Burlesque Awards.
What’s your catchphrase or favourite quote?
I am known for hashtagging #GSD - Get Shit Done.
I also love Henry Ford’s “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right.”
And I live by the motto that Thoughts Become Things – whatever you think about most, that’s what you manifest in your life. Which is why it’s so important to nurture positive self talk.
What do you do to relax or nurture yourself?
I am a natural extrovert, which means I recharge my batteries by being with other people (whereas introverts need alone time to do that). Time with friends and people I care about is of utmost importance to me and I make sure I give as lot of energy to my friendships.
For proper alone time (and we all need that sometimes) I love flotation tanks. It’s something I always fancied trying and I fell in love with the sensation the first time I went. I am not really someone who sits still so being in a dark tank, floating in water for 90 minutes is the ultimate in relaxation for me. I try to go for a float at least once a month.
What was the last treat you bought for yourself?
A fabulous dress by Bernie Dexter (well known pinup model) in a gold metallic print with lipsticks all over it. It’s got pockets!
Favourite colour
Purple! I bleed purple
Favourite flowers
Freshias. They remind me of my mum who loved the smell of them and always had them in the house when they were in season.
What advice would you like to give to a new mumpreneur?
- Be kind to yourself. Don’t be a slave to guilt – when you are working, don’t guilt trip yourself about not being with your children. And when you are with your children, don’t guilt trip yourself about not working on your business. Balance is everything.
- Hold yourself accountable. No excuses. Do the things. Get shit done.
- Check your inner voice. Don’t tell yourself you are not enough. You are. You always were. You always will be. Get out there and show the world what a magnificent human you are. And pick your allies carefully. Surround yourself with people who love and support you and want the best for you.
- Get grateful. When you flood yourself with gratitude it’s hard to feel stressed or overwhelmed. Be in the moment and savour every experience.

thank you for putting this post out there. 🙂
Welcome Mary and thanks so much for your comment. I am also thankful that our featured mums share so much of themselves to inspire others, particularly when that sharing helps uplift and support our sisters x
I love reading these articles. Being so open about how you find running a business. I found it interesting that you are open about your negative self-thinking, which is something we all suffer from, to a greater or lesser extent. Business is one think that may push this to its limits though, as staff and customers can push buttons of self-doubt, that’s for sure. I also found it interesting that you don’t find yourself cool enough to own a MAC…well let me tell you, after reading this article, you certainly are!
Welcome Russell, thanks so much for your comment and support. You’ll be delighted to hear that since this interview, Heidi has gone on to push herself in spite of the negative self thinking and grow her business so quickly that she’s now in the top echelons of salespeople in the UK in the company, has won huge cash bonuses because of it and it coaching other women to be ‘unstoppable’ too!!!
