Monday Mumpreneur with Johanna Miller
Every Monday we feature a mumpreneur who’s ready and willing to open up their lives and their business to us.
They share with us their motivation, their challenges and their proudest moments in business and they also tell us how they take time to nurture themselves.
If you’re looking for inspiration then our featured business mums show you what’s possible.
I'm delighted to introduce you to this week's featured mumpreneur and love that she not only has found her own hidden talents and turned them into a business, but wants to encourage other to do the same ~ so inspiring.

Brief description:
My website is designed to be simple, yet elegant, to feature only my hand made designs.
Tell me about your children:
I am a mum of 1, Jack, he is 3 soon to be 4 years old! He keeps me sane, which is funny when he does tend to drive me insane at the same time! His words “We are best friends” Which I agree upon, like any mother my son means more than life to me.
Where do you live? Nottingham, uk
PC or Mac? PC
Tell us about your business
I run a small business designing and making by hand jewellery, accessories and home décor items such as plaques and ornaments. I specialise in making fun alternative designs, statement piece jewellery, plugs for stretched ears are a big seller, my customers love how the designs are unique unlike any thing that is currently available on the high-street. I also do a lot of commission work, where people tell me what they want, could be characters or product designed into almost any thing they can imagine!
What motivated you to become a mumpreneur?
I feel proud at what I have achieved in 11 months from when I first picked up my materials that I didn't even know existed They changed life for me instantly, I want to share that with other people encourage them that every one has a talent.. even if it is hidden!
What's been your biggest challenge in business?
My biggest challenge would be trying to successfully make my orders up and tidy the house! Working from home with a 3 year old, dog , cat and two kittens running about is not easy. The house constantly looks like a bomb has hit!
How have you overcome it?
I’ll get back to you on that when I find a time travel device to allow me to work, entertain and clean in one day!!
What's been your proudest business moment?
When shops I’ve visited have taken interest in my jewellery and made orders from me to sell it in their shops!
What's your catchphrase or favourite quote?
‘Sounds like a plan batman!’ Usually said to my son when he suggests we get a blanket, watch a movie and snuggle!!
What do you do to relax or nurture yourself?
Working with my materials does relax me, probably due to the concentration needed I forget about any stresses!
What was the last treat you bought for yourself?
A new tattoo!
Favourite colour: Blue
Favourite flowers: Sunflowers, orchids, daffodils
What one piece of advice would you like to give to a new mumpreneur?
Go for it! You will never know if you don’t try!! J

I loved reading this .. very inspiring .. and in this climate .. running you own business is sometimes the only way us mothers have a chance to be with our kids and earn our own money .. the best of both ..
I am a BBW/curvy ladies Fashion Designer .. and have been designing and making clothes since I was 12 years old .. I dont make anything for anyone under a UK size 16 .. I feel so strongly about positive body image .. I love women of all sizes .. but as BBW myself .. I have always found it difficult to find clothing to suit and fit properly .. hence me only designing and making for women like me .. all my *Phoenixx Girls* look gorgeous and are stunned at how I can make them look beautiful in my bespoke designs .. no matter what their size .. size is simply a number .. its someones heart and soul that makes them a beautiful person .. and I do love my job!! hehehe
Hi Susey,
Welcome to Mums Got a Business, thanks so much for your supportive comment. I love your philosophy and totally agree that “it’s someone’s heart and soul that makes them a beautiful person ..” ~ spot on! My featured mumpreneurs certainly are amazing role models for their children.
Hope to see you here again soon

I have a daughter myself (and two sons) .. so I try my best to give her a balanced view .. and to allow her be honest about how she is feeling etc .. without judging her etc ..
Its a difficult enough job growing up .. let alone growing up as a female .. so I show her she can do anything she wants to do .. it just takes time and patience ..
Susey ..

I loved reading this post. I too am a work from home mum, and understand how frustrating it can be to keep on top of work and home life. Me and my hubby and a blazing row only the other day over an unmade bed of all things!! That being said he is mostly supportive and that is a great help. Surrounding yourself with like minded, ambitious people is the best way of creating the person and place you want to be.
I’m just hoping I’m setting a good example to my daughter that you can be anything you want to be as long as you want it enough.
Looking forward to future posts.
